Biography

For Maurizio Romani, art and the sacred have always been inseparable aspects of the pictorial communication.
The teachers who contributed to cultivate his talent were religious: first at the compulsory school the Capuchins of Parma, one of whom was Augusto Mussini’s pupil; then Padre Angelico (in the world Arvedo Bertini), Maurizio’s academy of election.
In 1986 Alfredo Gianolio and Angela Nascimbene-Cucchi curate his first exhibition at the “Il Voltone” Gallery in Reggio Emilia. The nineties are very productive and his cultural contacts multiply: Romani meets such critics as Mario De Micheli, Federico Zeri and Dario Micacchi.
Maurizio’s life alternates between the artistic world and his artistic retreat in Roteglia (Reggio Emilia), where he was born in 1955 and where he has been living and working since then.
His deep knowledge of the lively world of contemporary art leads him to follow a poetic process between different genres and techniques, from the sacred to the portrait, to the technique of engraving, eventually the last few years trying his hand at still nature, which is appreciated by a large public.
In 1999 Pietro Zampetti presents an important exhibition of his in Ancona. Sassu, Guccione, Maccari, Sughi, Ventrone, Scalco and Mastroianni are some of his not only intellectual but also human references.
Randall Morgan, with whom Maurizio Romani shares a close friendship, will stimulate him into imbuing his still natures with a realism based upon the search for a new, clear, optical light able to lay truth bare, by stripping it of all frills, to reveal it in its intimate details.
His pictorial language becomes stronger and more artful in using the brilliant technical perfection that distinguishes him, without submitting himself to it. In 1996 Silvia Cuppini and Liana Bortolon curate an important exhibition in Urbino; other permanent exhibitions are held in Paris and Nice in the same year. His relationship with the circles of the Marches consolidates; there, his contacts with the MAS of Giulianova and the private galleries become usual.
By concentrating his studies on figurative painting, not only within Europe, from the postwar period up to now, the master has learnt how to modify his language and direct it towards the genre of landscape, which he had already started to investigate through engravings. His landscapes are not only views, but they combine the profiles of Reggio Emilia’s hills with human places invented by the artist; houses, industrial buildings which upset the verdant quiet of nature and maintain the impetuous detailed light of Romani’s range of colours.
Into 2004 the arcane poem of “The Canticle of Canticles” provides inspiration for a series of paintings in which colour is replaced by black and white, by a light, neat track of the pencil, a connection between engraving and painting. Again the sacred and the profane meet to sublimate the material world in an algid mysterious atmosphere.
